Hairdresser Stephen is a cut above after winning national award

A Sawbridgeworth hairdresser is celebrating after winning a prestigious national award.

Rudhair owner Stephen Ruddock was proud to be short-listed in two categories at the British Hairdressing Business Awards – and even prouder to win Best New Independent Salon for his Great Dunmow branch.

The salon in Market Place beat finalists from all over the UK to win the prestigious title, which recognises independent salon businesses less than two years old that boast a talented team, impressive growth and ambitious goals.

On being announced as the winner, Stephen, who also owns a salon in The Square, Sawbridgeworth, said: “This is unbelievable. We’ve had a tough couple of years. We launched the salon at the worst possible time and I put everything into it.

“This year felt like the right time to go for this award and talk about everything we’ve achieved. In the current climate, it’s so important to stand out and to prove that what we’re doing is different, so this, for us, is everything.”

Jayne Lewis-Orr, executive director of the British Hairdressing Business Awards, said: “The last two years have thrown countless challenges our way but we have seen multiple salon businesses open and thrive in spite of all the difficulties.

“Stephen has demonstrated a sound business plan and unrivalled passion, combined with the drive and focus needed to succeed, and he should be incredibly proud of his achievements.”

Stephen joked to the Indie that he wanted to be buried with his award, adding: “Winning one of the most prestigious awards in British hairdressing is a huge pat on the back for me.”
